Limits[]
John[]
John is capable of using this ability to shield another's mind so that their thoughts cannot be read or manipulated by telepaths, even telepaths who also possess this ability. However, they could still be affected mentally in other ways, e.g by telepathic hallucinations, memory-affecting abilities and mental manipulation. He cannot use this ability on himself, but his mind was successfully shielded by Peter. He needed contact to create the shield in the first place, but not to maintain it afterwards. The shield is completely undetectable, and a telepath wouldn't know what was blocking him or her. The telepath would only sense that they would be unable to hear any thoughts, and would experience static and then pain if they tried to force the ability. The shield cannot be taken down using this ability.

Mackenzie Parkman[]
Mackenzie will be able to shield the minds of others, protecting them from mind reading and telepathic commands. However, she won't be able to block other mind-affecting abilities. She also won't be able to people from telepathically induced hallucinations. She will need proximity to create and to sustain a shield. When she first manifests, she will also need to see the affected person, but she will later overcome this limitation. Mackenzie will only be able to shield her own mind when she is augmented. Her shields will be invisible and undetectable, and will cause telepathic feedback similar to what occurs if a telepath tries to read another telepath's mind.
